How Kea Pilates & Massage began

In 2022, Garyfallia Kontogeorgou moved to Kea after using Pilates for rehabilitation in her physical therapy practice for 20 years in Athens. She rented a small studio in Korissia and put in a single reformer. Her first clients were three local women from the village and a worker with a frozen shoulder.

The studio grew the way small things on islands grow: slowly, by word of mouth, by who-knows-whom. A second reformer arrived. After a while, Garyfallia moved her Pilates practice to Vourkari, where it is now located.

We are not in a hurry. The island is not in a hurry. Why should the body be?

The work we actually do

Most of our clients are not athletes. They are mothers, fishermen, teachers, sailors, retirees, occasional visitors from Athens and abroad. Some come every week for years. Some come for three sessions during a holiday and never come back. Both are fine. The aim is the same — to leave you, on the day you leave, with a body that is a slightly more comfortable place to live.

We are unfashionably unhurried. We will not promise to transform you in six weeks. We do not sell supplements, leggings, or branded water bottles. We do, occasionally, send people home with a small jar of our garden produce.

Four principles we keep coming back to.

i.

Smaller is better

Never more than four on the floor. Never more than two in the massage room. We turn people away in August on purpose, so the people we have are properly seen.

ii.

Local, literally

Most of our massage oils are organic and we pride ourselves for using organic materials throughout our studio.

iii.

Quiet is a practice

No music in sessions unless you ask. No screens in the studio. The phone is in another room. What you'll hear is wind, cicadas, the sea.

iv.

Bodies are not projects

You don't need to be fixed. You need to be listened to. The work begins where the body is on the day it arrives — not where we'd like it to be.

The two of us.
